I was prompted to buy this domain and see what I could do to help head off swiftboating at the pass when I heard Pat Buchanan say on MSNBC that rightwing 527s already are planning TV commercials featuring Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
What are the best countermeasures? One is to talk about what they're doing and why. Would humor work? Ridicule? Position the efforts as beneath serious consideration, low-rent cheap shots?

Just heard Jesse Jackson say on C-SPAN (progressives event held Tuesday) that we lost in 2004 because we wouldn't fight back. Right.

Never mind this, just making notes here for myself.
Part of what needs to be battled: reducing the choice to narrow shallow points. Swiftboaters count on voters to be dumb and driven by feelings. It's disrespectful to stipulate that.
Not related: Online activism can carry over offline. Might consider publishing fact sheets that can be printed out to pass along to people who will only read things offline. If audio, could make .wav files available for people to burn to CDs for unwired friends.

issue of mccain distancing himself from the nastiest race attacks in the general election. is it enough to say "i don't approve" as he did with the talk show host in Ohio who invoked the middle name offensive? could he be pressured to take disavowal a step further? if he doesn't say "i wish they wouldn't do that on my behalf" could the half measure be positioned to imply approval?
